The Experience
Cappiello & Associates is lead by its Chairman, Mr. Joseph L. Cappiello, BSN, MA.
Mr. Cappiello spent 10 years at The Joint Commission, the nation’s premier healthcare accrediting body, as Vice President of Field Operations directing key internal functions as well as the 500 member field surveyor cadre. Mr. Cappiello has a keen evaluative eye on what organizations must do to be compliant with ever-evolving requirements from The Joint Commission and the strategies that make organizations world-class in providing high quality, safe patient care. Add his unique insight into the philosophy of the Joint Commission and the result is a consultancy that is extremely effective in supporting an organization’s drive to imbed The Joint Commission’s standards into its culture.
Known as an innovative and dynamic leader, Mr. Cappiello led Joint Commission initiatives on emergency management and disaster response, personally debriefing nearly 300 healthcare organization following disasters. His expertise was frequently called on as he was asked to sit on a number of expert panels on topics ranging from altered standards of care to evacuations in long term care facilities to the utilization of home health care organizations in pandemic flu planning. He testified before Congress following his experiences with Hurricane Katrina and with the National Transportation Safety Board following the evacuation of Houston during Hurricane Rita. He is an often requested speaker on both the national and international stage and is a contributing author to several publications on emergency preparedness and response.
Mr. Cappiello has recently been recognized for his video “Emergency Management for Frontline Staff”, produced by HCPro, Inc. with a 2009 Communicator Award, the largest and most prestigious award of its kind.

Michael K. Wyrick, Major General, USAF, Ret. and Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives
Mr. Wyrick is President of Health Response, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in healthcare leadership, strategies, operations and contingency preparedness. He has 37 years of leadership and management experience directing complex health care operations. He completed his 30-year Air Force career as Deputy Surgeon General of the Air Force, retiring in February 2000. From September 30, 2002 to September 30, 2005, he was executive director of a nonprofit association of 13 hospitals in northern Virginia, the mission of which was to improve medical emergency preparedness and counter-terrorism measures in northern Virginia.
In addition, Mr. Wyrick has been President of National Capital Region Emergency Response, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., coordinating emergency preparedness efforts of many varied organizations in the National Capital Region. Prior to that, he was Vice President for Emergency Preparedness of the District of Columbia Hospital Association. He has been the administrator of community and regional hospitals and a tertiary care medical center in the Air Force.
General Wyrick has presented on healthcare leadership, healthcare strategies, advanced leadership and management techniques and mass casualty preparedness to many audiences. Included are: the Department of Homeland Security; the International Organization for the Improvement of Healthcare in Brussels, Belgium; the US Medicine Institute; The Surgeon General of Great Britain; the Virginia Department of Health; the American College of Healthcare Executives; the Washington Area Consortium of Universities; the National School Safety Center; the Washington Area Council of Governments; the Virginia Primary Care Association; and the Association of Freestanding Radiation Oncology Centers.
Mr. Wyrick is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and an Honorary Diplomat in the American Academy of Medical Administrators.
